Day 10 Cape Barren Island 23 March 14

After a better than expected night Josh was up early with the required smelly coffee going on the stove.
He is an expert at getting things under way.Sent Solquest off fishing for flathead out into the bay.
Needed some thing to replace the elusive Pig last night for the cook up on Cape Barren.

Some crew members were getting frustrated at passing so many fishing and diving opportunities during our voyage. The hectic schedule not allowing much time for just fishing.
No doubt Nick had many "spots" gleaned over many months from willing fisher friends, have a fish  off here and there they often say.No time to pull-up when traveling as most transport stages an all day event on Solquest and filming when you arrive.
Well they did well this morning a fine catch of flats ,mostly large ones.

Next job ferry them ashore to pluck the turkeys and ducks Ross got the day before, sent Ben over to take them in when asking what was the hold up Rod answered on the radio we are just drying Ben off,we found out later as he got on board Solquest the dinghy painter slipped from his hand and the dinghy was loose, nothing to do but swim after it.Garth is about the same size so he returned in fresh clothes .
Got every one ashore to pluck ducks. After a while Nick and Mathew came out to clean the fish as no suitable spot found ashore.
Masterpiece gradually filled up as we were to take every one and all gear required for the Cape Barren Island cook up and tour.Solquest to follow at a leisurely pace.

Ben got busy to feed eight hungry mouths with new baked bread, salad, cheese, ham etc.
Arrived there about 1.30 on a half tide coming in,tried to get alongside the jetty but my props got tangled up in the sea grass about twenty feet from the jetty so had to back off a bit and anchor.
Lowered the dinghy and ferried all participants ashore to meet Jim Everett and another guide.
After Mathew and Nick returned and picked up the things required for the cook up along with, have you got a bit of this and a bit of that we could have, they filmed on the jetty meeting the elders ,all piled into the back of a flat tray and disappeared up the road in a cloud of dust and cigarette smoke, none of us smoke.
A few locals turned up to say  hello ,Ben and I had lunch and cleaned up,amazing how much mess the crew off Solquest can make in a jiffy.Sand and all!

We cruised around to beautiful Thunder and  Lightning Bay,then to the next bay Key Island Bay we were looking for a spot for the cray pot out of the tide as I have been caught before here with strong currents pulling the buoys down and we need to get away on time tomorrow.
Saw some fish on the sounder so Ben cast a lure in and caught a nice Pike.
Found a good spot for the pot and set it.Time will tell,I have tried many times in these islands and never caught a cray, the locals told us there is heaps of big ones around here.My mother would say you are not holding your mouth right son ,never found out what it meant.

Solquest turned up late in the afternoon and anchored in the Western end of Thunder and Lightning as there is a handy road and Jim said he would drive the mob back forecast predicted a west wind in the morning.
Was well dark when they arrived waving the lights from their mobiles to us.
We were watching Doc Martin on the TV and missed most of it,seemed to be a pivotal episode with some action in it for a change, well I suppose there is always I view.
All returned full of  afternoons events and the delightful spot shown them for the cook up with a waterfall and all.
Had chicken curry for dinner and as most people dog tired off to bed.
Will have to get up early to wash up the farmers gear deposited on my aft deck!

Sunset at Thunder And Lightning Bay.        Crew ashore plucking ducks at Fotheringate Bay.
